A Brazilian Icon
20 March, 2026
The Amazon rainforest internationally symbolises nature, and it is one of Brazil's well-known icons. When I visited the rainforest myself, that's when I noticed a more local symbol that was hidden within the leaves of the forest, reminding me of the quote "Nations don't make symbols: people do" (Harper & White, 2021).
I was warmly welcomed by many Indigenous tribes, each exhibiting unique traditions and lifestyles. I was surprised when they told me that many Western pharmaceuticals include ingredients from the Amazon rainforest!
I was taught by one of the locals that Brazilian nuts support heart health, and after being offered one, the earthy taste brought my heart closer to nature. I learnt how natural resources bring back favours to tribal communities when inhabitants of the rainforest respect native species. It became clear to me that the rainforest's biodiversity flourishes the bonds between flora and fauna, and respecting this relationship strengthens trust and connection through communal unity. This is when I noticed that the rainforest had a deeper local symbolism of connection and healing rather than the broad symbol of nature which is more apparent to tourists.
Undoubtedly, the symbol of the rainforest is created by people, encompassing the quote of (Harper & White, 2021). This experience made me realise how hidden cultures exist within the leaves of the rainforest, where locals may view the same icon with different symbols than tourists. I learnt that local symbols may be less apparent than international ones, but either way, icons are made alive by the people and their creation of symbols.
